Carroll Launches Online Petition For Gurkhas

3.04.21pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 3rd Sep 2004

Peter Carroll has launched a petition to help the Gurkhas in their campaign to be given citizenship when they have completed their service. The Home Office is sitting on hundreds of applications for citizenship from retired Gurkhas. Some applications have been under consideration for over 2 years. Only a few days ago, a retired Gurkha was deported.

Peter Carroll said, "Many people from both the local area and across the country have asked how they can support this campaign. I am urging these people to do two things. First, to sign our petition. Second to write to the Prime Minister at 10 Downing Street urging him to act."

One of the easiest ways to sign the petition is to log onto www.shepwaylibdems.org.uk/gurkhacampaign

Peter, the prospective Lib Dem candidate in Michael Howard's Folkestone seat said, "The Gurkhas have a long and proud record of service and bravery to this country. They are held in the highest esteem and in great affection. It is an outrage that they are being forced to live in this 'citizenless' way. If any group of people qualify for citizenship it is surely the Gurkhas and their families. It appears that MPs like Michael Howard are not prepared to really fight for these people. My Party and I will do all we can to help".
