Maureen discovers Shepway to CUT Plastic Bottle Recycling11.16.49am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 28th Mar 2007
Lib Dem campaigner and keen re-cycler Maureen Speller has discovered that the plastic bottles skip at the Ross Way waste centre will be withdrawn on 31 March this year. The cut will come as a blow to those who do not have doorstep recycling collection (in particular those in flats) as it will make it harder to recycle these materials. Foord resident Maureen was shocked. She said: "First Shepway botched the introduction of doorstep recycling, costing over a million pounds more than expected. Now, despite claiming that the scheme is working, they are actually making it HARDER for many people to recycle plastics by removing that facility from Ross Way. "Many people on Foord and across Folkestone live in flats, and currently do not have doorstep collection. Clearly, this needs to be reviewed urgently, but in the meantime, the removal of the only facility many of these people have to recycle plastics is crazy. "What do Shepway expect those people to do with their plastics now? Drive further to recycle? Throw them in the landfill waste? It's yet another example of muddle-headed thinking by Shepway Council. Shepway should commit to retaining ALL current recycling facilities, and expanding and promoting them."
