Simon Bishop: Demanding Better for Our Area

I'm Simon, and I'm delighted to have been selected to stand for the Liberal Democrats in Folkestone and Hythe in the forthcoming General Election.

I'm really proud to be the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Folkestone and Hythe.

I grew up here, going to Saltwood Primary School and The Harvey Grammar. I was a member of 1st Saltwood Scouts, learnt to swim in Hythe Pool and still regularly kayak and paddle board on The Royal Military Canal and the sea. My first full-time job was at Saga and I also worked as a waiter at The Imperial Hotel in Hythe and a barman at the old Bonkers nightclub in Folkestone Harbour.

After school I studied Economics and Geography at Edinburgh University and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study International Relations and Journalism in New York at Columbia University.

I'm currently Deputy Chief Executive of a global charity helping the world's poorest children. During my 25-year career I have also worked around the world as an aid worker, journalist and in politics, including advising the UK government's Secretary of State for International Development and working for The United Nations and the BBC.

More importantly, I'm a proud husband and a dad of two small girls.

Great to be out early this morning leafleting commuters at Folkestone Central and West train stations.

It is easy to get depressed about the state of the world. But we Liberal Democrats have much to celebrate.

The Conservatives and Labour continue to veer off to the political extremes, leaving us as the only clear Remain party and the only one that wants to inhabit the centre-ground. In Jo Swinson we have a dynamic leader, who is the antithesis of Johnson and Corbyn. Our membership has grown from 40,000 in 2015 to more than 120,000 today. We are a party of renewal. A rapidly expanding movement of hope.

If ever there was a moment to harness that hope it is now. The decisions made by the winner of any upcoming general election will define our country for a generation. This is also politics in 2019, when anything can happen, even in a seat dominated for too long by the Conservatives.

I care passionately about Britain and am not going to stand by while others wreck it.

If you will work with me to beat the Conservatives here in Folkestone and Hythe, I'd love to hear from you.
